»Knowing the fact that Klaus Schulze is finishing a new opera soon I took the courage to take his opera Totentag from the shelf where it has been resting since 1995, the year I purchased it.
In that year I listened, better say tried to listen to it several times but again and again it made me nervous and gave me a severe headache: the terrible voices, the avant-garde way of singing! Not my cup of tea during that time. So, in the new millennium, I tried it again.
Well, indeed I tried again and I failed! Again I felt the need for some tranquilizers to reduce the tension in my head. For me this music is still not suitable for consumption and I think it will never be.
Am I afraid for KS new opera? No, I believe the master has improved, as I found out on his last recordings. At least, I hope he will not make the same mistake to believe that a contemporary opera needs no beautiful arias and orchestration. I hope he skips the avant-garde and continues to perform fine voices combined with electronics as he did on CWII. With all that hope and believe I'm really looking out for the new work.
I will buryTotentag forever and I hope to be surprised by the arriving of the Angeli!«( Jos Kivit, from The KS Circle no. 83, June 2003) |
